I can confirm that the last scheduled steam working into Brighton was the Plymouth train with 34098 "Templecombe" on Saturday 30th April 1966. I met my sister, who had been to stay with grandparents in Sherborne, off it. I spent precious pocket money to travel back to boarding school on this train as far as Salisbury on the following Tuesday (3/5/66) only to find it was now diesel hauled -unbeknown to me, the steam heating season ceased at the end of April and this was the reason the service was steam hauled all that winter.

Steam operation of the West Country expresses recommenced at the beginning of the winter 1965 timetable. Ceased late April (last known date: 30th) or early May ? 1966
