PICTURE
GALLERY
Each
month, at least one special marine image will be published from images
sent to the BMLSS. This
can be of the seashore, undersea world or any aspect of the marine natural
world, especially the underwater life, but not restricted to life beneath
the waves. Topical inclusions may be included instead of the most meritorious,
and images will be limited to the NE Atlantic Ocean and adjoining seas,
marine and seashore species and land and seascapes.
Photographs
can now be directly uploaded to:

18
April 2007
The
seashore
off Lancing
Beach Green at low tide
was silted up much more than Worthing two days earlier
and the fauna on the rocky patch was much poorer, notably frequent Squat
Lobsters,
Galathea
squamifera, Hairy
Crabs, Pilumnus
hirtellus, and tiny Long-clawed
Porcelain Crabs, Pisidia
longirocornis, under rocks which attracted
the attention of ten Crows.
One Crow was
persistent, pecking at sponges and seaweeds on rocks, inserting its beak
in nooks and crannies, seen with very small crabs
in his mouth about once every two minutes at least five times, and one
occasion it used its beak to roll a large rounded rock completely over.

WORLD
OCEANS DAY
Adur
will be one of the UK leaders in presenting an environmental exhibition
of
World
Oceans Day on Coronation Green,
Shoreham-by-Sea.
Find
out what lives in the sea and on the seashore off the Sussex coast, with
exhibits hosted by local experts and enthusiasts of the undersea world.
Live lobsters and crabs, a rock
pool aquarium, the whale and dolphin exhibition,
a touch table of strandline exhibits found
on the shore and other interactive displays will be on display under the
marquee on the green overlooking the River Adur
by the footbridge. Allow
at least an hour for an educational exhibition for the youngest to the
oldest member of the family. Exhibitors will be able to find the time to
answer questions about marine life.
Admission
is free and refreshments are available on the green.
Adur
World Oceans Day is run by a committee comprising representatives of
the
British
Marine Life Study Society, West Sussex County Council, the Sea
Watch
Foundation, Friends of Shoreham Beach and other groups, with support from
Adur District Council.
ADUR WORLD OCEANS
DAY 2007
Invitations
have now been sent out to participants in previous years and other enthusiasts
that have shown an active interest.
However,
there is is still a limited space available in the marquee for anybody
else who wants to participate. I have not sent out invitations to everybody
as in previous years, because this part of the funding has ceased.
Tables,
electricity is all provided and there is no charge for genuine enthusiasts.
Stalls are expected to be manned throughout the day. Attendance is several
thousand. Theme is the ocean enviornment and seashore.
Space
always ends up limited in the end. We cannot cater for last minute entrants
because we have to order the tables, allocate space etc.
