A beautifully marked first winter male Desert Wheatear delighted birders at Worthing Splash Point (east of Worthing Pier). Virtually tame, it was flitting around the rocks and actively feeding - and not at all bothered by people or cameras. The little beauty was confident enough to make eye contact with his many fans.
 

The Desert Wheatear, Oenanthe deserti, is a very rare visitor to Britain. If an Eastern race bird does land here, it has been blown off course quite a bit as it would have been on its way from its breeding grounds in central Asia to its wintering grounds in Pakistan and north-east Africa. 

17 October 2012 A Storm Surge put extra height on an exceptionally high tide of 6.8 metres at 12:56 pm, just beginning to flood Coronation Green, Shoreham-by-Sea.  The measured surge height was 0.33 metres Storm Surge Forecasts (National Oceanographic Centre) The extra storm surge height on the high spring tides at New York USA, caused by the superstorm (Post-Tropical Cyclone) Sandy was up to 1.26 metres (4.13 feet) on 29 October 2012.  Photograph by Peter Weaver Shoreham Weather 2012

Another Fin Whale, Balaenoptera physalus, has become a casualty washed up dead on the east coast of England at Shingle Street, near Hollesley, Suffolk, in the afternoon. The juvenile female whale was 9.8 metres in length and did not appear to be injured.

Another Sei Whale, Balaenoptera borealis, was washed ashore, this time in Northumberland on the north-east coast of England. It came ashore on the sandy beach at DruridgeBay, (seven miles wide from Amble in the north to Cresswell in the south). The 8.6 metres long whale was extremely thin and too malnourished to be refloated and to any chance of survival, so it was euthanised.

This is the book I should have written (and I dare say a few others as well) and is a much needed introduction to the world of the seashore and the hobby of rockpooling. It is a photographic guide to most of the common species encountered which is much appreciated as newcomers and even experienced rockpoolers will try and match up what they have seen to a visual image (and photographs work better than line drawings) and this will usually get them the correct species, (unless there are two very alike species and then you will need a specialist identification guide like the Collins Guide to the Seashore).

However, the seashore is a rich and interesting habitat with a myriad of species and 225 pages of this large pocket guide are comprehensively covered to suit the enthusiast.

"Being able to names to what you see and, better still, to use your observations to add to our knowledge about the natural world is what this book is about."

But the book for a popular audience is more than this. It starts from the assumption that the parents and teachers and older children are unfamiliar with the seashore environment.
