Each
month, at least one special marine image will be published from images
sent to the BMLSS. This
can be of the seashore, undersea world or any
aspect of the marine natural world, especially the underwater life, but
not restricted to life beneath the waves. Topical inclusions may be included
instead of the most meritorious, and images will be limited to the NE Atlantic
Ocean and adjoining seas, marine and seashore species and land and seascapes.
Round
Crab
Atelecyclus
rotundatus
Photograph
by Penny Martin
This
rarely mentioned crab wasdiscovered
on a sandy sea bed at about 20 metres depth near Nevi
Skerry in Scapa Flow,
Orkney. It tends to hide or be overlooked. It is widespread and found offshore
of all coasts of the British Isles but records between the tides
are limited to an occasional fisherman discards. I would be interested
to hear of further reports and any multiple occurrences as I mostly receive
reports of single crabs.
