Each
month, at least one special marine image will be published from images
sent to the BMLSS. This
can be of the seashore, undersea world or any
aspect of the marine natural world, especially the underwater life, but
not restricted to life beneath the waves. Topical inclusions may be included
instead of the most meritorious, and images will be limited to the NE Atlantic
Ocean and adjoining seas, marine and seashore species and land and seascapes.
Pyrosoma
individual salp with the amphipod crustacean Phoromina
Photographs
by Debbie Brunton

Orkney
Wildlife facebook
In
the pelagic ocean
realms, fact is often stranger than fiction, and this seems to be the case
for the small transparent amphipod
Phoromina,
discovered on the shore by Debbie Brunton
at Grobust
on the island of Westray,
one of the Orkney Isles
off the north coast of Scotland. The 25 mm long Phoromina is
a commensal that
was discovered inside the gelatinous salp
in which it spends its life.

The
sea shell sculpture sits on Aldeburgh’s beach to the north of the town.
Every
June
a classical
music festival takes place at nearby Snape
Maltings. This festival was founded by Benjamin Britten along with
Eric Crozier and Peter Pears in 1948.
It has taken place ever since and is a fitting tribute to the three.
