Shoreham-by-sea and the lower
reaches of the Adur valley are particularly rich and
varied in wildlife, because several distinct
biogeographical habitats are all condensed into a
small area. The chalk downs quickly drop down into
the coastal plain, tranversed by the River Adur that
had been deflected east at the estuary by
longshore drift.
