In 1973, the Cetacean Group was formed within the Mammal Society to obtain new information about whales and dolphins around the United Kingdom, and to identify the major threats that they face. In 1992, the Sea Watch Foundation was founded as a charity to take on the role of the Cetacean Group. It remains affiliated to the UK Mammal Society.
