Proceedings
of the marine species recording workshop
29
& 30 January 1998
Supplement
Current marine species
record collections in the UK and suggestions for links to future national
schemes.
Compiled by Keith Hiscock
Reference (if referred to separately)
This list of marine species record collections has been compiled mainly from the results of a questionnaire circulated at the Marine Species Recording Workshop held at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 29 & 30 January 1998 (Foster-Smith 1998). The list is for plants, invertebrates and fish. Specifically mammal or bird lists are not included. The separate collections identified here have, as far as possible, been ordered geographically as many are regional collections. Records in survey reports are not included. Records maintained by institutes, museums, wildlife trusts and societies or similar bodies ('Institutional records’) are included together with significant and systematically maintained records of individuals ('personal records’). The list includes defunct but revivable schemes. It is intended to expand this list for Britain and Ireland.
If you are involved in a marine species
recording scheme, please check that your scheme is listed and is accurately
described. The list is being maintained within the Marine Life Information
Network (MarLIN) project based at the Marine Biological Association. The
contact point there for additions and corrections to this list is Alison
Hood (ahoo@pml.ac.uk). The up-to-date list can, once installed, be viewed
on the MBA web-site (http://www1.npm.ac.uk/mba).

Established originally as the 'Rare marine fish database’ with funding from the nature conservation agencies to the Marine Biological Association. Transferred in 1997 to the National Marine Aquarium at Plymouth. Access status is currently uncertain as the database is held by the Marine and Estuarine Fish Advisory Service. New records continue to be maintained by the NMA. Includes a Welsh fish database. |

References
The comments from workshop contribution are answers to the question:
"If you are involved with a local Marine Species Recording Scheme what do you feel would be the method most appropriate to your own Scheme which would enable you to contribute to, and integrate with, species information from national sources?"
2. Data Standards for What, Where, When, Who.
3. Transfer standards to a national database eg the New Recorder for transfer of data from spreadsheets and flat form databases.
4. Facility in the national database for entering and storing occasional records.
5. Standardised package for grab datasets compatible with other systems.
6. A standard database framework, set out and agreed upon by all local record centres. This would ensure compatibility between databases improving the ability to share data.
7. Having a co-ordinating body to refer to for assistance and access to other additional sources of information. Such as the proposed "UK Marine Biology" consortium.
8. Better communication (by any means you like) and awareness.
9. A good working marine database. Financial support ("seed money")
for recording schemes.
