Shoreham-by-sea and the lower reaches of the Adur valley are particularly rich and varied in wildlife, because several distinct biogeographical habitats are all condensed into a small area. 

The chalk downs quickly drop down into the coastal plain. 

The River Adur cuts a narrow angle through the valley, until it is deflected east at the estuary by the longshore drift of shingle.
