In the middle of the day, a Red Fox ambled down Nicolson Drive, Shoreham, by the allotments without one iota of worry about humans on bicycles.

Six separate large bright yellow Brimstone Butterflies were my first of the year welcome sight fluttering strongly over north Shoreham on the urban side of the A27 By-pass in the weak sunshine under a bright blue sky. Hawthorn was in leaf.

 I discovered my first batch of frog spawn in my garden pond in Eastern Avenue, Shoreham in the morning.

A flock of 35 plus Crows congregated in the bare branches of the Sycamore in Corbyn Crescent, Shoreham.

A conventicle of more than twenty of Magpies chattered over the rooftops of Park Avenue and tree tops of St. Giles Close. Shoreham.

A Starling on a chimney was the first bird of 2022, followed almost immediately by a flying Herring Gull and a House Sparrow with a dipping flight between the bushes, as I looked south out of my upstairs kitchen window. The temperature was 12°C at 10:00 am, dry but humid and with hardly a breeze inland.

An escaped female Derbyan Parakeet has spent the best part of two months flying around residential north Shoreham in the vicinity of Parkside seen in the photograph in a favoured large tree in Middle Road. It's raucous call is more often heard than a clear sight of the bird.

Daffodils were flowering in their usual profusion at the bottom of Parkside and on Park Avenue Open Space, both near Buckingham Park, north Shoreham. This was nearly two weeks earlier than last year.

A clump of Mistletoe was spotted in the fork of a tree in the Park Avenue Open Space. This was the first time I have noted this parasitic plant.

In Buckingham Park, Shoreham, the first Daffodil of the year appeared in flower.

A Peacock Butterfly was spotted in a Shoreham garden. It must have been disturbed from hibernation on a cloudy day. It was the first butterfly of the year and the first local Peacock Butterfly seen in January on record.

The first flowers of the decade, just after midnight, were Herb Robert by the wheelie bins. It was fine (air temperature 9° C) at the turn of the year with a slight easterly chill to little to no wind (Force 2). There was no bird activity to be seen or heard in the early hours in the dark hazy moonless (after midnight) sky.

In the misty daylight, I opened the front door and immediately spotted a big black Crow fly into the bare branches of a Sycamore.
