4/1/06 3 Harbour Porpoises were seen milling and resting off Capstone Point SS519418 at 1322 hrs They were then watched for 20 minutes as they moved up and down channel between Tunnels beach Ilfracombe and 500 metres west of Capstone Point.
4/1/08 A young Grey Seal was seen hauled out at Turnaware Bar SW863382 at 1010 hrs
5/1/08 3 Harbour Porpoises were milling and resting 100 to 300 metres off Capstone Point SS519418 at 1300 hrs. They headed east after 25 minutes.
5/1/08 A baby Bottlenose Dolphin carcass, only 3ft long was found on the beach at Porth Kidney Sands SW5438
6/1/08 5 Harbour Porpoises, a group of three and 2 singles, were seen 500 metres northwest of Baggy Point SS419406 in the afternoon.
6/1/08 A single Harbour Porpoise was seen off Bull Point SS461469 in the afternoon
6/1/08 2 Harbour Porpoises, an adult with juvenile, was seen 100 metres off Capstone Point SS519418 at 1352 hrs, then 2 more appeared 400m to the east and 300m out the two groups joined up and were watched for 40 minutes milling and resting.
10/1/08 A Bull Grey Seal was seen below the Watch at Cape Cornwall SW350318 at 1240 hrs. SeaState 6
11/1/08 3 Harbour Porpoises were seen feeding about 10 metres off the main headland at Berry Head SX948567 at 0930 hrs. Two were moving side by side at times. Gannets, Kittiwakes and Black Backed Gulls were in the area.
12/1/08 2 Harbour Porpoises were milling and resting 150 metres off Capstone Point SS519418 at 1230 hrs. They were about 200 metres apart. with 3 Herring Gulls circling
12/1/08 A dead Triggerfish was found on the beach at Porthtowan SW690482
14/1/08 5 Harbour Porpoises were milling, possibly feeding, about 20 metres out off Berry Head SX948567 from 0900 to 0920 hrs. Gannets and Fulmars were in the area.
14/1/08 A Minke Whale was seen south of Porthgwarra Cove SW371216 beneath feeding gannets at 1130 hrs
15/1/08 4 Harbour Porpoises were milling, possibly feeding, off Berry Head SX948567 from 0845 to 0900 hrs. Seabirds were in the area.
15/1/08 A Common Dolphin was found stranded alive on the beach at Marazion SW514308 and the RSPCA and BDMLR attended. The sea was too rough to attempt to put it back into the sea at Marazion so it was taken to Carbis Bay SW528389 on the north coast, where the sea was much calmer and successfully released
16/1/08 5 Harbour Porpoises were moving around an area about 20 metres off the main headland at Berry Head SX948567, possibly feeding, from 0930 to 0945 hrs. Two were constantly moving around together. Gannets and Fulmars were in the area.
17/1/08 2 Harbour Porpoises were moving quickly 30 metres out off the main headland at Berry Head SX948567 from 0940 to 0955 hrs. Gannets, fulmars and guillemots were in the area.
22/1/08 2 Harbour Porpoises were seen 30metres off the main headland at Berry Head SX948567 from 0930 to 0940 hrs. No sea birds in area.
22/1/08 2 Harbour Porpoises were seen 700 metres south of Porthgwarra Cove SW371216 under feeding sea birds at 1100 hrs
23/1/08 3 Harbour Porpoises were off Berry Head SX948567 from 0915 to 0930 hrs. Two were about 20 metres off the head the other 40 metres out
24/1/08 2 Bottlenose Dolphins were seen breaching among feeding gulls during the afternoon at TowanBeach, Newquay SW810620
25/1/08 12 dolphins, probably Bottlenose Dolphins, were seen heading west off the NCI Lookout at St. Ives SW521411 1030 hrs
25/1/08 A male Striped Dolphin was found stranded alive at Gunwalloe Church Cove SW661204. At first it looked relatively unscathed and BDMLR volunteers followed the usual procedure of covering the dolphin with a light cloth and keeping wet until the vet arrived. The dolphin remained calm all the time, and the vet found various abrasions on the edges of the pectoral fins and tail from contact with rocks, and it looked in reasonable condition, but appeared to be moderately under nourished. However when the vet examined the beak he found a large wound on the lower jaw where a flap of skin and underlying tissue had come away exposing the bone. Realising that if the dolphins was returned to sea in this condition it would probably develop an infection of the bone and suffer badly, it was decided to put the animal to sleep

27/1/08 7 Bottlenose Dolphins, were seen heading east well out in St. Ives Bay SW5240 at 1050 hrs
27/1/08 7 Bottlenose Dolphins, were seen heading east off Hayle SW549391 at 1130 hrs.
31/1/08 A 20” Loggerhead Turtle was found stranded alive in a mound of seaweed on Blackrock Beach Near Bude, SS195018. BDMLR who attended said it was covered in oil and in a very weakened state. It was taken to the Blue Reef Aquarium at Newquay where it was given the name James Bond after it’s stranding number 007. It will be nursed back to health and they hope to airlift it to warmer waters later in the year.
1/1/08 A Minke Whale about 3 metres long, so probably a young one, was seen moving around the bay in shallow water at Swanpool SW802312. It moved into deeper water before dark but still within the bay. BDMLR will be monitoring the situation at daybreak.
3/2/08 3 or 4 dolphins were seen heading east off St Ives NCI Lookout SW521411 at 0950 hrs
3/2/08 A Goose Barnacle was found on the strandline at Porthmeor Beach SW516410
5/2/08 A Minke Whale has been off Porthallow SW797232 for most of the weekend, thought to be the one seen at Swanpool on 1st Feb
5/2/08 A second Loggerhead Turtle has been found on west country beaches within a week. This new on only 8” long was found at Putsborough Sands SS4441 and was also taken to The Blue Reef Aquarium at Newquay where it is being nursed back to health before airlifting to warmer waters.
9/2/08 4 or 5 dolphins were seen heading north off Fire Beacon Point SX108929 from 1230 to 1300 hrs, by 23 walkers on the coastal footpath.

15/2/08 A pod of about 5 Bottlenose Dolphin, including a juvenile was seen heading west off Carrick Du SW513410 at 1000 hrs. About an hour later a few Harbour Porpoises were seen heading east.
17/2/08 A new born baby Fin Whale only 6•2 metres long, was found stranded on a beach near The Lizard SW694115. BDMLR volunteers attended and took samples of blubber, skin and baleen to test for chemical contaminants. Volunteers revisited next day to see if it had been rolled over by the tide so that they could examine the other side but discovered that it had been washed out to sea
17/2/08 A Bottlenose Dolphin was seen near the King Harry Ferry SW840396 at 1212 hrs. It surfaced once as it headed up river.
20/2/08 2 Bottlenose Dolphins were seen breaching between Black Rock SW833317 and St. Anthony Head SW846311 at 1402 hrs.

27/2/08 In the past 2 weeks the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Strandings Network volunteers attended 10 strandings, nine of which were Common Dolphins, and one Harbour Porpoise. They were spread out along the south coast between Downderry SX315538 and Penzance SW485312 with 3 of the strandings in the Roseland peninsula area.

2/3/08 A Bull Grey Seal was seen below the Watch at Cape Cornwall SW350318 at 1235 hrs. Sea State 4
3/3/08 A Bearded Seal, Erignathus barbatus, was spotted at Loch na Keal NM5039, on The Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, western Scotland. The Bearded Seal is the largest on the northern phocids, and can reach 2·5 metres in length and weigh 340 kilograms. Usual habitat The Arctic.

31/3/08 9 Bottlenose Dolphin were bow riding the Orca Seasafaris boat off Pendennis Point SW826315 at 1010 hrs
1/4/08 2 small cetaceans, dolphins or porpoises, were seen circling and generally heading east off St Ives Island NCI Lookout SW512411 at 1000 hrs
3/4/08 On a wildlife watching sea trip in the Orca Seasafaris boat 10 to 12 Common Dolphins were seen feeding about 7½ mile ESE of St. Anthony Head SW846311 at 1402 hrs. A couple of mile further ESE they saw a pod of about 50 Common Dolphins travelling at 14 to 15 knots, some of which joined the boat for a bow ride for a while. Later the boat was stopped about 6 miles south of Porthmellin Head SW869320 and 10 Common Dolphins approached and played around the boat. As they returned to Falmouth, 2 juvenile Grey Seals were seen at Shag Rock, near St Anthony Head, SW846311, one on the rock, and a very small one in the water, at 1503 hrs
3/4/08 9 Bottlenose Dolphin were in The Carrick Roads SW8332 near the Governor Buoy at 1604 hrs
3/4/08 6 dolphins were in the Carrick Roads SW8332 bow riding a small sailing boat heading toward Falmouth Docks.
5/4/08 A small whale was seen heading slowly west, 25 to 50 metres offshore. Seen from the cliff top in Gerrans Bay just west of Nare Head SW916370. It occasionally showed a small section of its body, but no fin was seen. Probably a Minke because it is the smallest of the rorqual whales, and it’s small dorsal is well back near its tail
5/4/08 5 Grey Seals were seen basking on Black Rock Falmouth SW833317 at noon, and an adult Grey Seal was seen in a cave at Gull Rock SW927368 at 1503 hrs. A young Grey Seal was seen at Shag Rock SW947397 in the morning and again at Zone Point SW850309 in the afternoon

7/4/08 A lone Common Dolphin went westward past The Minack Cliff Theatre SW387220 at 1200 to 1230 hrs. It appeared to be a little disorientated, deviating a lot, coming close to shore, but otherwise swimming well and looked OK

8/4/09 Two more rare Loggerhead Turtles have stranded dead in the south west, one at Newquay SW808621 and the other on the Isles of Scilly . The public are asked to look out for these creatures so that survivors get the emergency treatment they so badly need.
8/4/08 There was a brief sighting of a Grey Seal heading west on the surface 50 metres west of Capstone Point SS519418 at 0745 hrs.

20/4/08 5 or 6 Bottlenose Dolphin, including 2 juveniles, were off Fowey Harbour entrance SX 120509 circling fast in groups of two, feeding with seabirds following and fish jumping. There were no distinctive marks, all dolphins were very clean.

21/4/08 2 Harbour Porpoises were beneath 100s of seabirds 1 km southwest of the NCI Lookout at Gwennap Head SW365217 at 1645 hrs.
23/4/08 A pod of 5 to 10 Common Dolphins went southwest past Porthgwarra Cove SW371216 at 1015 hrs. Then returned to a stationary small angling boat and leapt around it for a few minutes. There was also a Harbour Porpoise in the area.

One was a female, and Gannets were feeding with them.

9/6/08 26 Common Dolphin died as result of a mass stranding in Porth Creek SW8633 on the Percuil River. Rescuers had helped 5 others to return to their pod in deeper water but at least 3 others were still stranded and British Divers Marine Life Rescue team are hoping to return them to open water on the next high tide. Others have been found stranded near The King Harry Ferry SW842396 on the Fal River, and Gillan Creek SW7725 across Fal Bay near the Helford River mouth. 7 were eventually rescued but one had to be put down by a vet.

16/6/08 Three Bottlenose Dolphins, 2·5m, 3·5 m, and 4m, were swimming slowly in increasing circles one mile south east of Fowey Harbour SX120509 at 1930 hrs. They were diving for up to 8 minutes at a time and they appeared to be lethargic. A Wildlife watching boat remained 200 metres away and the dolphins showed no interest in the boat. The boat skipper felt a bit concerned about their behaviour.

1/8/08 A young Northern Bottlenose Whale stranded on a Hampshire beach during the morning. It was suffocating under its own weight as it lay in the mud. The local fire brigade with the help of several members of the public managed to get it into a sling and back into the water. However a vet discovered that it was a very sick animal, suffering from kidney failure, so it was brought ashore into a harbour and given a lethal dose of anaesthetic.

10/11/08 A large male Grey Seal was seen floating in shallow water just off Teat’s Beach, Plymouth just outside the aquarium. It was getting gently washed around with just the top of its head and its back showing and was thought to be dead. Observers were discussing what to do when it suddenly blew a little air from its nostrils and swam off.

30/11/08 2 Common Dolphins, mother and calf, became stranded on mud by a receding tide at Frenchman’s Creek SW7425. BDMLR came to the rescue and relocated the pair to Porthhallow and successfully re-floated them.

Around Lands End on the north coast off Wicca Cliff SW464398 the crew saw a pod of about 5 or 6 Bottlenose Dolphins.
