Two dead Minke Whales, Balaenoptera acutorostrata, were washed up, one each on the beaches of Cromer and Sea Palling on the Norfolk coast.

The Bearded Seal, Erignathus barbatus, was still at mid-Yell in the Shetland Isles. This Bearded Seal is the longest staying example of this Arctic species remaining in British seas and recorded as long ago as 23 March 2013.

A metre long Siberian Sturgeon, Acipenser baerii, was caught on rod and line by Peter Johnson off Greenhithe Pier in the River Thames estuary. It is was released back into the sea after capture. This species is native to the Ob river systems that flow into the Arctic Ocean, in Siberia. In its native habitat it is considered anadromous and able to migrate the sea and live in salt or brackish water. but it is mostly to be found in the freshwater reaches of these large rivers. Therefore, it has been found suitable for aquaculture and the pet trade and the most likely reason for its appearance is that was accidentally or deliberately released as a previously captive specimen.

A Humpback Whale, Megaptera novaengliae, spotted in the North Sea off the Norfolk coast is the first on written record. The whale spent most of the morning swimming about two miles out to sea between Winterton and Horsey.

Atlantic Grey Seals, Halichoerus grypus, which come to the saltmarsh at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire to give birth late in the year (October to December). This female has a particularly plain pelage. They can be identified as Grey Seals (as opposed to Common Seals, Phoca vitulina, which have their pups in spring) by the straight forehead to nose profile, and the parallel nostrils. The scientific name Halichoerus means Sea Pig, while grypus means hook-nosed. 

"They look like an empty bag waiting to be filled with milk when as newborn as this one. It is amazing how fast they fatten up." 

The new Adur Ferry Bridge between the town of Shoreham-by-Sea and the shingle peninsula of Shoreham Beach was open to the foot and cycling public from 13 November 2013. This is a important way to the beach avoiding a congested road route over the Norfolk Bridge. 

Photographers submitting pictures should indicate if they wish them to be considered for inclusion as confirming permission takes work and time and can delay publication of the news bulletins.

This is the book I should have written (and I dare say a few others as well) and is a much needed introduction to the world of the seashore and the hobby of rockpooling. It is a photographic guide to most of the common species encountered which is much appreciated as newcomers and even experienced rockpoolers will try and match up what they have seen to a visual image (and photographs work better than line drawings) and this will usually get them the correct species, (unless there are two very alike species and then you will need a specialist identification guide like the Collins Guide to the Seashore).

However, the seashore is a rich and interesting habitat with a myriad of species and 225 pages of this large pocket guide are comprehensively covered to suit the enthusiast.

Extract from the foreword by Keith Hiscock:
"Being able to names to what you see and, better still, to use your observations to add to our knowledge about the natural world is what this book is about."

But the book for a popular audience is more than this. It starts from the assumption that the parents and teachers and older children are unfamiliar with the seashore environment.
