11/1/06A pod of 7 or 8 Bottlenose Dolphins was seen off St Agnes SW697515 with a lot of bird activity feeding on shoals of small fish.

12/1/061 Harbour Porpoise was feeding off Berry Head SX948567 at 0900 hrs and two were there at 1600 hrs

12/1/06A pod of 5 or 6 Bottlenose Dolphins was off Perran Sands SW7556 at 1630 hrs. They were probably feeding, as there was a lot of surface activity and many birds diving nearby

13/1/06A pod of at least 6 dolphins was seen from Droskyn Point SW751543 at 1600 hrs. They were well spread out in groups of 2 or 3, some surfing the swell, not in white water, and some were breaching with spectacular leaps, generally heading north.

22/1/062 Harbour Porpoises swam past Berry Head SX948567 at 0930 hrs.

22/1/06Huge pods of Common Dolphins surrounded 3 fishing boats off Falmouth. MFV Amethyst was surrounded by too many to count, 4 miles SE of St. Anthony Head SW846311 and also MFV Ophelia in the area. Later, MFV Peter John,was surrounded by a huge pod, feeding on Red Mullet and Mackerel near The Manacles SW8120.

22/1/063 Grey Seals were watched for ½ hour from 1100 to 1130 hrs in Nanjizal Bay SW3623. Two were rubbing against each other in the water, and the observer thought it to be sexual behaviour, whilst the thirdpopped to the surface from time to time.

22/1/06A pod of 5 or 6 Bottlenose Dolphins was seen off Gwithian Towans SW579411

22/1/066 or more Bottlenose Dolphins, including 2 juveniles, were seen off Porth Kidney Sands SW5438 from 1200 to 1230 hrs accompanies by a big gathering of Auks, Gulls and Gannets

23/1/06A Harbour Porpoise was seen in Woolacombe Bay SS450420

24/1/06A Grey Seal was watched herding a huge shoal of pilchards in the outer harbour at Portreath SW655455, with a great deal of seabird activity, and possibly a second seal involved keeping them in the harbour and diving among them.

25/1/06A 12 ft Basking Shark was seen off the Lizard Lifeboat Slip SW716125 at 1200 hrs.

26/1/06A large Grey Seal has been spending each night perched on top of a buoy off Torpoint SX440547 during the past week but disappears during each day

2/2/06A Fin Whale was seen SW of Dodman Head SX000392 at 1500 hrs. It had finished feeding in 200 ft of water and did an eight-minute dive while travelling.

2/2/06A pod of 6 to 8 Bottlenose Dolphins were breaching, playing and surfing with human surfers in the Bay at St Ives SW5241 from 1000 to 1500 hrs. A Grey Seal was watching near by.

5/2/06A pod of between 12 and 20 Bottlenose Dolphins was watched for 30 minutes feeding beneath possibly 200 gannets and gulls of Rumps Point SW931812

17/2/067 Harbour Porpoises, 6 adults and a little calf, were seen in Rosemullion Bay SW7928. They were feeding with 200 Shags and 50 Gannets.

22/2/0612 dolphins were seen breaching 100 metres offshore at Cape Cornwall SW349318 before heading south.

22/2/062 dolphins, and possibly a third, were seen playing in the surf with surfers at Porthtowan SW690482 at low tide about 1700 hrs.

22/2/065 dolphins, in two groups, were watched for 20 minutes or more, close inshore off Stepper Point SW915785. 4 left the area, but the remaining animal was still in the area 30 minutes later, with seabirds present.

22/2/062 Harbour Porpoises were seen off Berry Head SX948567 at 0900 hrs.

22/2/063 or more Harbour Porpoises including one juvenile, were feeding actively beneath gannets 500 metres south of Porthgwarra Cove SW371216from 1345 to1415 hrs.

23/2/063 Harbour Porpoises, including a juvenile and a very pale brownish adult, were 300 metres off Gwennap Head SW367215 at 1300 hrs . The pale brownish adult had been seen in the area before.

24/2/062 Harbour Porpoises were seen off Berry Head SX948567 at 0845 hrs

24/2/062 or 3 Harbour Porpoises were seen entering St Ives Bay from the National Coastwatch Hut at St Ives SW526411 at 0900 hrs. They were later seen being chased by larger dolphins, probably Bottlenose.

25/2/063 Harbour Porpoises were seen feeding off Pedn-mên-an-mere SW384217 with many gannets diving.

25/2/06A Harbour Porpoisewas 500 metres south of Porthgwarra Cove SW371216 at 1215 hrs

25/2/06A pod of 7 or 8 Bottlenose Dolphins was seen from cliffs at PorthtowanSW690482. They appeared to be feeding as they headed north beneath diving sea birds and were watched for 10 to 15 minutes between 1300 and 1400 hrs.

25/2/06A Grey Seal was seen on the Camel Estuary side of Pentire Point SW923805. It was very large with a flat head profile so probably a male.

15/3/068 Bottlenose Dolphins and a juvenile, were seen heading east just off the harbour at St. Ives SW520407 at at 1055 hrs. There was some breaching.

15/3/06A Harbour Porpoise and calf was seen heading east across Penberth Cove SW404226 breaking the surface twice at 1104 hrs

16/3/068 Bottlenose Dolphin were seen feeding off Riveria Towans Hayle SW551382 at 1550 hrs

17/3/068 Bottlenose Dolphins were seen heading east just off St Ives Harbour SW520407 at 1110 hrs and were later seen breaching off Riveria Towans, Hayle SW551382 at 1300 hrs

19/3/068 Bottlenose Dolphins were seen heading east off Porthmeor Beach SW516410 at 1800 hrs.

19/3/06There were at least 15 Bottlenose Dolphins including several babies in the surf with lifeguards at Hayle Towans SW551382 at 1500 hrs. There were a few jet skis present but not bothering the dolphins.

19/3/062 Harbour Porpoises were seen feeding off Berry Head SX948567 at 1300 hrs

20/3/068 Bottlenose Dolphins were seen heading east off St. Ives SW520407 at 1205 hrs.

21/3/06A Harbour Porpoise was seen just south of Porthgwarra Cove SW371216at 1010 hrs and an adult with a juvenile was seen 1.5Km NW of Pendeen Watch SW377358 at 1100 hrs

21/3/06A pod of 6 to 8 Bottlenose Dolphins was seen heading east off Botallack Head SW361338 from 1130 to 1200 hrs. They were very close inshore and the pod included a very small juvenile, perhaps no more than a metre long, which was continually breaching.

23/3/06A large number of Grey Seals were seen in Hudder Cove, SW606430. The observer lost count at 90 and considered that about 30% were young ones.

28/3/06A Bottlenose Dolphin was seen feeding in Swanage Bay SZ0580 from 1530 to 1550 hrs

28/3/05Surfers reported 2 dolphins very close in at Praa Sands SW5728 at 1815. BDMLR unit attended and found one, not swimming well, in the rough surf. It came very close inshore, knee deep at the closest for a few minutes, then disappeared as it got dark. A 12 mile stretch of coast was searched for 7 hours from early next morning but nothing was found

8/4/063 or 4 dolphins, 3 to 4 metres long, so probably Bottlenose Dolphins, were seen off Pendennis Point SW826314 from 1400 to 1420 hrs. Swimming close to a buoy at first then headed out to sea being harassed a bit by a sailing boat.

9/4/06An unidentified whale was seen off Berry Head SX948567 at 1000 hrs and a Harbour Porpoise was seen at 1015 hrs

9/4/06A Minke Whale was seen off Carn Gloose SW353313 early in the morning.

12/4/06A Harbour Porpoise and A Bottlenose Dolphin was seen off Berry Head SX948567 at 0800 hrs

13/4/06The carcass of a 20ft Humpback Whale was found washed up on Kingsdown Beach TR380490 near Deal in Kent. Samples are being sent to London to establish the cause of death. It had been hit by a ship’s propeller.

10/6/06A Grey Seal was off Capstone Point, Ilfracombe SS519481. First seen ¼ mile off the harbour, and an hour later 100 yards off the point. Later it surfaced with a fish, which it ate at the surface.

10/6/068 Basking Sharks were in Mounts Bay about 3 miles southeast of Penzance in position 50º6.45N 5º30.03W at 1030 hrs. Plankton samples taken in area included Copepods, Euphausids and Mysids

10/6/066 Basking Sharks were about 2 miles east of Mousehole in position 50º05.10N 5º30.16W at 1448 hrs. One large shark had a large part of its dorsal fin missing. Plankton samples take included Copepods, Euphausids and Mysids.

10/6/06A pod of 7 Bottlenose Dolphins with a juvenile was seen heading west off Godrevy Point SW581433 at 1740 hrs with little surface activity. The same pod was seen again, still heading west, off Porthmeor SW424316 at 1930 hrs

10/6/06A pod of about 100 Risso's Dolphins was seen heading slowly east about 38 miles south of Falmouth SW819327. The larger dolphins were going round the pod in a sort of round up manner, and were floating high in the water as if watching the boat at about 100 ft.

Young ones were rubbing up against the larger ones and exposing about half of their bodies.

An Ocean Sunfish was also seen off Hell’s Mouth..

15/6/06A 20ft Basking Shark was seen in Mount Bay near the site of the wreck of the Steamer Hellopes about 3 miles off Penzance, approx position SW5125. The shark approached divers who had just surfaced from the wreck site and swam around them.

15/6/06A Basking Shark was seen about 2 miles off Mousehole at 1930 hrs in position 50º4. 43N 5º29.48W. Plankton samples taken at the site contained Pagurid and Coenobitid Larvae

15/6/06A Pod of 7 Bottlenose Dolphins, including a juvenile, was seen heading east off Porthmeor Beach SW516410 during the morning, the pod returned heading west at 1600 hrs but quickly turned and headed east again at 1615 hrs. They were seen off the beach again at 2100 hrs heading west.

16/6/06A pod of about 12 Bottlenose Dolphins with a juvenile, was off St. Michael’s Mount SW515310 at 0930 hrs. They were being harassed by boats which were approaching much too close to the pod. Police were informed and a phone call was made to the Mount Harbour to get the harassment stopped. Wildlife Trust members attended and order was restored.

They seemed to be resting and were observed from a distance from a Wildlife charter boat, however there was some harassment when a boat from the Mount harbour came too close to the pod and followed it around. The pod was seen again just outside Penzance harbour at 1745 hrs and were again surrounded by boats, and one followed the pod toward Marazion.

24/6/06A Basking Shark approached a boat anchored in 12 ft of water at Porthcurno SW387222late morning and circled it several times. It came very close, almost close enough to touch and it was as long as the 18ft boat. The boat left soon after high tide at 1445 hrs and headed east for Penzance and saw another 21 Basking Sharks on the way, some were 25ft long.

24/6/06Many Basking Sharks were seen from The Elemental Tours Wildlife tour boat on trips along the coast today. One off Tater du SW440230 at 1130 hrs. Six off Merthen Point SW419227, Four off Porthcurno SW387222, Two off Gamper Bay SW403221, Two off Gwennap Head SW367215. 30 or more between the Longships Lighthouse SW320252 and The Cowloe Sennen SW348266 and another 30 or more between Sennen and The Brisons SW340311 and some of these were up to 8 metres long. The afternoon trip produce 1 Basking Shark off Lamorna SW451241, eleven ½ mile off Tater du SW440230, fifteen ½ mile off Logan Rock SW396219. one in Porthcurno Cove SW387222, and 7 one mile off Portghcurno. Grey Seals were also seen on the trips, 6 near the Longships, one at The Runnelstone and a pup wearing a hat, on St. Clement’s Isle near Mousehole, This would have been a pup released from the seal Sanctuary. Ocean Sunfish were also seen off Porthcurno, The Longships, Gwennap Head SW367215 and Tater du.

The photograph sent to me showed a very clean looking fish, virtually free of parasites, which is unusual for this fish. However it also showed that it’s left pectoral fin was missing. Could this fish have been caught in a net and removed most of the parasites when struggling to free itself from the net?

18/9/06A very rare Pufferfish, Lagocephalus lagocephalus was caught 40 miles off Lizard Point SW694115, by a Newlyn based beam trawler.

20/9/062 Harbour Porpoises were seen off Capstone Point SS519415 at 1830 hrs. One was first seen 100 yards offshore staying in the area for more than 10 minutes and coming within 25 yards of the point. A second was seen 250 yards to the west with 6 gannets circling and diving over about a ½ mile area.

21/9/062 Harbour Porpoise were seen between Capstone Point SS519415 and Tunnels Beach, Ilfracombe SS5247 at 1520 hrs.They were 250 yds offshore with 2 gannets overhead, one of them dived. Later 2 were seen heading east of Capstone Point at 1825 hrs One was 100 yds offshore and a smaller one 50 yds off.

14/10/06A dog walker found a baby seal on the beach at Swanage SZ0430 at 0800 hrs. The umbilical was still attached, and experts believe that the mother gave birth last might, and has been scared off because this is a very busy beach, and it is unusual for seal pups to appear here because there are no colonies nearby. There was no sigh on the mother so the pup, which was given the name Nala, was taken to the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek in Cornwall. Nala was a little under weight, but is responding well to the care at the sanctuary

18/10/06A Grey Seal was seen 50 yards off Capstone Point SS519418 at 1750. It was swimming east on the surface for 20 seconds, then dived as a small boat approached. Resurfacing 500 yards to the east it continued on the surface for a short distance before diving again.

20/10/06A pod of about 8 Bottlenose Dolphins, including 2 juveniles, was seen heading south out of Falmouth Harbour toward Pendennis Point SW826315 at 1530 hrs. They were in two groups about 100 yards apart with the young ones breaching. The pod was seen later out in the Bay at 1720 hrs and again at 1800 hrs. They seemed to be looking for fish but were not seen to stop to feed. There was no mackerel in the bay. Sea state was 2, and the wind SW 4.

20/10/06A pod of 8 to 10 Harbour Porpoises was seen in Fal Bay heading north east from Rosemullion Head SW797278 moving at a steady speed at 1615 hrs.

24/10/06A dolphin with a damaged trailing edge of the dorsal fin, swam alongside a yacht from Falmouth SW819327 to St. Mawes SW847330. It was 8 to 10 ft. long so probably a Bottlenose.

24/10/06A large Bottlenose Dolphin followed a sail boat from 1 mile south of Black Rock SW833317 into The Carrick Roads Falmouth before heading off toward a small boat with anglers aboard. It collided with the boat several times on the way in and had scars on its back and a nick in the dorsal fin , perhaps as result of the collisions.

Biggest stalks 2 cm wide and 10 cm long.

14/11/06The recent discovery of a stranded Grey Seal brought to the end the story of Canvy, a seal with a history. A brown tag on one of its rear flippers identified it as Canvy a male that was originally rescued in 1996 and released after rehabilitation at the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek in 1997. The Sanctuary curator said “we receive numerous reports of seals after their release, but Canvy’s survival for ten years in the wild is the longest that we have on record, and represents a real success for our rehabilitation efforts”.

They were watched for about 30 minutes 300 yards offshore

29/11/06A pod of 8 Bottlenose Dolphins headed east past Hayle Estuary SW549391 at 0800 hrs and were seen heading in the same direction off the Estuary at 1400 hrs.

29/11/064 or more Harbour Porpoises were probably feeding as they headed west off Charlestown SX039515 for there were shoals of fish, probably mackerel, in the area

30/11/066 to 8 Bottlenose Dolphins, including one calf and one juvenile, were seen in rough seas in Sennen Bay SW3526 from 1215 to 1245 hrs

1/12/06Hundreds of by-the-wind-sailors, Velella velella, were found stranded on the beach at Par SX085535. Varying in size from 5 to 8 cm with sails running from top right to bottom left, and mostly on the previous high tide line.

2/12/06A pod of about 5 Bottlenose Dolphins was seen in St. Ives Bay SW5240

8/12/063 Grey Triggerfish, Balistes capriscus, were found washed up dead on the beach at Polzeath SW9378. They were mature adult fish about 30cm long and in good condition.

13/12/06An Ocean Sunfish was seen off Porthgwarra SW371216

13/12/066 Columbus Crabs, Planes minutes, were found at Perranporth SW756544 on a plastic barrel and another on a plastic float

13/12/06The carcass of a 145 cm (57”) Leatherback Turtle was found washed ashore at Widemouith Bay SS197022,. and 2 Pufferfish have been found on North Cornwall Beaches during the last couple of weeks. One at Summerleaze SS202007 and the other at Porthcothan SW8572

14/12/06Recent storms and high winds have taken their toll on breeding seals and their pups off the Cornish Coast. The National Seal Sanctuary reported that it had already taken in 23 seals, including 11 still with their white coats, that they have for the first 3 weeks of life. Just one of the 23 was too weak to be revived and 11 of them needed 4 hourly feeding. The Sanctuary hospital is full and another 16 pups are in the convalescence and nursery pools. They are hoping for a spell of clear weather so that some releases can be made.

16/12/06A rare Ray’s Bream Brama brama was netted off Looe SX2652 by MFV Temeraire, (Skipper R Chapman) It was collected by Dr. N. Pope and taken to Douglas Herdson NMA for identification.

17/12/06Goose Barnacles were found attached to a fresh looking piece of driftwood stranded on rocks at Wembury SX495487

17/12/0620 Violet Sea Snails, Janthia janthia were found at Woolacombe Sands SS450420. Most were just 1 cm in size and some were still alive with their bubble rafts and “inked” the finder as he put them in a bucket. They were washed in with tiny By-the-wind-Sailors, Velella velella, just 12 mm in size, a few Buoy Barnacles and a 6” Triggerfish. The finder kept the dead shells, and returned the living ones to the beach, and they were all taken out to sea on the next tide.

18/12/0634 Violet Sea Snails and 5 Triggerfish were found stranded at Sennen SW3526 

18/12/06A Harbour Porpoise was seen 1 Km southwest of Porthgwarra Cove SW371216 at 1530 hrs

18/12/0610 to 12 Bottlenose Dolphins, including 2 juveniles, were seen in Mounts Bay SW4723 at midday.

19/12/06A Grey Seal was seen bottling and diving at Guglane SW931810

19/12/066 Harbour Porpoises, including a possible juvenile were seen off The Rumps SW936812. First seen passing between The Rumps and The Mouls , they remained feeding in the area for a while before heading north. One individual kept very close to another all the time and looked a bit smaller, so probably a juvenile. A Grey Seal was seen bottling and diving in the area

19/12/06Hundreds of By-the-wind-sailors have stranded at Praa Sands SW5728 over the past couple of days, and 70 Violet Sea Snails Janthia janthia have been found among them.

19/12/06A Columbus Crab Planes minutes was found among Goose Barnacles attached to a polystyrene float stranded at Sennen SW3526. Also found on the beach were about 40 to 50 Violet Sea Snails and 2 Triggerfish. 2 Skate egg cases were seen with the Goose Barnacles/

1912/0614 Harbour Porpoises were watched from Baggy Point SS419408, They were spread out around the point individually and in pairs.

19/12/0635 Violet Sea Snail,2 Triggerfish, a Columbus Crab and 2 Skate egg cases were found stranded on the beach at Sennen SW3526

24/12/06A pod of 7 Bottlenose Dolphins stayed in an area 200 metres off St Agnes Head SW697515 for ½ hour from 1515 hrs with some spectacular breaching and then headed south west

25/12/067 or 8 Bottlenose Dolphins were seen heading east 400 metres offshore at Chapel Porth SW696495. There was a slight swell but not breaking and the dolphins were seen surfing in the swell.

25/12/063 Harbour Porpoises were feeding off Berry Head SX948567 at 0905 hrs and a dead one was found on rocks at a beach near by.
