Grey Triggerfish, 39 cm and 25 cm long, and 10 Goose barnacles attached
to a piece of wood, were found on the strandline at Mawgan Porth SW8467

very small Kemp’s Ridley Turtle was found stranded alive on the high
tide line at Woolacombe Beach SS450420 North Devon. Two BDMLR medics were
surfing there at the time and their attention was drawn to the stranded
turtle. They arranged to meet a representative of West Hatch RSPCA wildlife
hospital who had agreed to give it temporary accommodation and treatment.
A couple of days later it was transferred to the Weymouth Sea Life Centre’s
Turtle rehabilitation Centre where they have more experience with turtles
and facilities to deal with it. The centre was very surprised to receive
such a small turtle, which was only about 35cm long. The female turtle
was very hypothermic on arrival, with a bleak outlook, but after raising
its temperature and initiating feeding, it began to recover well. The staff
are now hopeful of releasing it back into the wild off The Canaries
in late April.

Black Rock. They did not appear to be feeding and did not stay in the area
for long. A yacht in the area stopped and did not harass the animals

to be very attracted to moving boats. When the boat stopped, they moved

and then stopped, and appeared to be feeding for a while in an area off
the Holiday Park. At 1545 hrs they resumed playing, but some of the play
seemed to be quite aggressive toward the two young ones, looking like a
severe telling off, by the adults.

drifting west 300 metres off, and later at 1800 hrs a Grey Seal was seen
bottling for about 1 minute 100 metres west of the Point.

was no serious harassment. They were young dolphins, not fully adult, but

rare shark, Darkie Charlie, Dalatias licha, was recently caught
off Cornwall and landed
at Newlyn Market. This species is not usually found in UK
waters but more commonly in deeper waters of Continental Europe at depths
of 200 to 600 metres. They grow up to 6 ft. and feed on deepwater fish,
squid and crustaceans. The shark was bought at the market by a firm of
taxidermists with plans to stuff and mount the unusual creature.

0846 hrs, feeding beneath gannets near the Wolf Rock Lighthouse SW270210.
They moved closer to the lookout by 1000 hrs, about 1·5 Km to the
west, still feeding with about 300 gannets diving. There were quiet periods
when the gannets rested on the surface and the dolphins disappeared below,
presumably to drive the fish toward the surface resulting in a frenzy of
diving gannets. They were still in the area at 1330hrs.

very large thresher shark was caught 3½ mile south of The Runnelstone
SW369200. When weighed it was found to be 510 Kg (1122 lbs) making it one
of the heaviest thresher sharks caught anywhere in the world and the second
giant from Cornish waters in a few weeks. The female was 15ft 10” long
and sold at Newlyn Market for £255-00, (50p per kilo). It may not
be eaten, but more likely stuffed for display purposes.

mortem by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network. It appeared
to be in poor condition and, with no marks on the
body, was not thought to be bycatch. The results of the post mortem
test are pending and it is hoped that it will shed light on the cause of
death. A whale lice was found on a healed wound on the dolphins flank which
is thought to be Isocyamus dolphinii,.

cuttlebone of Sepia orbignyana was found on the strandline at Mexico Towans
SW559389. Other cuttlebones on the strandline were probably Sepia officinalis.

pregnant Bottlenose Dolphin was found at Gunwallole Fishing Cove SW654223.
It was retrieved for post mortem by Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings
Network. The dolphin was 3.2 metres long and appeared to be in poor condition.
Whale lice, thought to be Isocyamus dolphinii, were found on a healed wound
on its flank. Post mortem results are pending and it is hoped that these
will shed light on the cause of death. It is not thought to be bycatch.

of Cape Cornwall SW349318 at 1200 hrs

Grey Seal was seen 100 metres off Ilfracombe Pier SS527479 at 1330 hrs.
It surfaced three times and bottled for a while then headed west. At 1345
hrs a Harbour Porpoise was seen milling and resting 100 metres off Capstone
Point SS519418. On both occasions small gulls were overhead, probably Blackheaded
Gulls.
