Transversed by the River Adur and with the downs and the sea nearby, the town of Shoreham-by-Sea  supports a varied wildlife flora and fauna.

The underlying rock is mostly chalk, except for clay alluvium in the old river course. Tree fauna is sparse because the sea air restricts the native species and because 30% of the trees were decimated by the Dutch Elm Disease. A further 30% of the remaining large trees were destroyed in the Great Storm of 1987.
