A
small 12.6 kg
tuna, discovered in Plymouth Fish market in the morning, was caught in
gill net off Mevagissey,
south Cornwall. It was identified as a small Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus
thynnus.
It
was originally though to be the rarer Big-eyed
Tuna,
Thunnus
obesus.

A
one metre long Albacore, Thunnus
alalunga, was found washed ashore
at the head of Loch
Long
in the Firth of Clyde,
south-west Scotland. This pelagic, oceanic
and migratory fish In the Scombridae
family of Tunnies and Mackerel
is usually found in large shoals in the mid-Atlantic in temperate and tropical
waters in a more southerly latitude of British Isles and in the Mediterranean
Sea. This is the first record on the BMLSS News
Pages. The identity of this fish has not
been confirmed. It may be another Bluefin
Tuna, Thunnus
thynnus.

This
unusual fish was caught at Abbotsbury
on Chesil Beach, Dorset, on rod
and line with a Pouting
bait at 8.30 pm
by Kevin Hill from Crediton.
The yellow
mouth of this Bass-like fish rather gives away its identity as the rare
Meagre
Drumfish,
Argyrosomus
regius. It is so rare in British seas
that there are no angling records. It is a southern fish with a population
in the Mediterranean and adjacent seas. This is a juvenile as meagre
it is not and the name arose because of a transcription mistake in an old
book.

A
Cornish Blackfish, Schedophilus
medusophagus, was caught in three metres of water from a 10 metre
long trawler fishing for the Brown Shrimp,
Crangon
crangon, off the coast of Maplethorpe,
Lincolnshire. This is a deep water fish usually
found at depths of 300 metres or more and the incidental catch was very
unusual.
