A
Yellow-browed
Warbler, Phylloscopus
inornatus, in a Southwick
garden showed very well and called regularly. The bird frequented a pine
tree in the first garden on the left in Phoenix Crescent. This
small bird is a Scarce
Vagrant in Sussex.

I counted
twenty Smooth (or Common) Newts, Trituris
vulgaris, in my Mill Hill Drive garden
pond in north Shoreham, but there has not been any courtship displays yet.

A
dead Gannet,
a dead Puffin,
and other sea birds,
together with miscellaneous cargo debris were
discovered washed up on Shoreham Beach.
Dozens of pens, car parts, chocolate boxes and bars were seen. These
two sea birds are not usually washed ashore in Sussex in such a fresh condition.

Adur.
The

Nine TV company with Charlie Dimmick
filmed on 15 June
2006 on Lancing beach (at the Shoreham
end near Widewater), referred to as Shoreham-by-Sea,
featured
shrimping with Peter
Talbot-Elsden (British
Marine Life Study Society). The programme also featured Lancing College
Farm and Coombes Farm (with the newly planted Black
Poplars).

A
half a dozen Red-breasted Mergansers
were counted on Widewater Lagoon, five
on the water diving and one of these piscivorous ducks was preening at
the water's edge. None was seen with a fish in its saw-bill. Nearby, a
single Ringed
Plover with
bright orange legs run around on the grass and pebbles, occasionally snatching
what I assume were small insects. At least one each of a Redshank
and Little Egret
were seen in the shallows as expected.

south Lancing garden.

On
Shoreham airfield there were at least 1,500 Lapwing
hunkered down in the wind and rain and around
the houseboats on the River Adur estuary
there was a flock of 65 Teal,
the most we have seen here for a few years. On the beach immediately south
of Shoreham Beach Green there were 51 Sanderling.

am the temperature fell below freezing for
the first time this year and fell to a low of minus 0.6 ºC at 6:24
am.
