REPORTS

January 2018
My
first arthropod
of the year was a tiny Money Spider,
Linyphiidae,
indoors. A Fox
lolloping down Adelaide Square, in Shoreham, in the evening, was my first
wild mammal of 2018.

Sponge-covered
Scallop
On
a cool (air temp 4.0 °C - 8.2 °C
with wind chill) clear day there was very little wildlife of note. Lignite
washed ashore on the strandline of Shoreham
Beach where a sponge-covered
scallop
stood out amongst the strands of seaweeds.

January 2018
In
the early afternoon these were no noteworthy birds on Widewater.
Just a Turnstone
foraging on the shingle edge of the sea. At low tide
on the River Adur
by Ropetackle a LIttle Grebe
was swept quickly down stream in the rapids, but dived under into the very
shallow water. A single Oystercatcher
patrolled the gravel tideline as the light quickly faded..

Predictably a
young Herring Gull
was my first bird of 2018
on a cloudy
morning by Shoreham-by-Sea
railway
station. Nearby, a diminutive Oxford
Ragwort was my first wild
flower of the new year.
