WILDLIFE
REPORTS

April 2022
A
White-tailed
Eagle was spotted from my house (near
the shore off Widewater). It was being mobbed by gulls
and crows.
Bluebells
at
Tottington Wood
Dappled
sunlight filtered through the freshening green canopy of Tottington
Wood
to swathes of Bluebells, and
clumps of Wood Anemones, Greater Stitchwort,
Lesser Celandine, Primroses and occasional
Dog
Violets. A Grey
Wagtail wagged its tail on the fringes
of the big pool, but it was too far away to be sure of its identity
to bird species.

Grizzled
Skipper
Clambering
around the lower slopes of Mill Hill was
close to becoming physically impossible for me even in dry weather. Butterflies
were frequently seen in the intermittent afternoon sunshine: a few Brimstones,
two Small Tortoiseshells,
one Peacock,
a few Green-veined Whites,
occasional first of the year Grizzled Skippers,
a handful of Dingy Skippers,
and lastly a few pristine male Common Blues
for the first time this year. Another butterfly watcher reported a Green
Hairstreak.

April 2022
In
breezy conditions. too breezy to be inimical for butterflies
I visited the relatively sheltered Waterworks
Road, but
it was still too blustery for photography. There was at least one male
Orange-tip,
5+
Brimstone
Butterflies, one Peacock,
and most conspicuously about half a dozen smallish white butterflies, some
of them recognised as Green-veined Whites.

Orange-tip
Fluttering
amongst the green canopy, a few Holly Blue
Butterflies were my first of the year
over the southern footpath section of the Waterworks
Road,
Old
Shoreham. Down much lower amongst the
vegetation on the verges there was a Brimstone
Butterfly on patrol, at least one smaller
than normal dark brown Speckled Wood
and a few restless Orange-tips
and Green-veined Whites.

April 2022
My
first Large White Butterfly
of the year visited White Deadnettle
near Waller's Pumphouse
at the northern end of Pill Box Way and western end of the Toll
Bridge.

April 2022
There
were precious
few flowers on the lower slopes of Mill
Hill for a handful of Peacock Butterflies
and
two Dingy
Skippers.

April 2022
In
the afternoon on the Adur between the Toll Bridge and the cement works,
nine White Storks
appeared and circled overhead for quite a while.
A
bright yellow Brimstone Butterfly
fluttered over the earth bank at Cuckoo's Corner in the sunshine (16°C).
I
spotted my first fish of the year, a few
3-spined
Sticklebacks in the nearby Ladywells
Stream.
Wayfaring
Tree was in flower. English Elm,
Goat
Willow and Hawthorn were in leaf, but Sycamore was just
beginning.

April 2022
Green-veined
White Butterfly
With
the weak sunshine (14°C),
the flying insects visited the flowers
on the verges of the Waterworks Road,
Old
Shoreham. Most of them including three species
of butterfly were seen by me for
the first time this year: Orange-tip,
Speckled
Wood, and Green-veined
White. Bumblebees,
ladybirds,
and hoverflies
were frequent and active.

A
White-tailed
Eagle was forced to land in my Truleigh
Hill garden by gulls and corvids harrying it.
Garlic Mustard was
in flower alongside the Coombes Road
near Cuckoo's Corner. A Grey Heron
lifted off from the pasture separated from Ladywells House by a stream.
Nearby the first Bluebells
showed and the early flowers of Cow Parsley.
The new small flowers of Hawthorn
were found near Cuckoo's Corner.
11
April 2022
On
a cloudy day with an easterly breeze, a smattering
of Dog Violets flowered
on the sheltered lower slopes of Mill Hill.
The first Milkwort
was spotted. Blackthorn was
starting to flower. An invisible bird warbled from inside the mostly bare
thorny
bush on the southern top part of Mill Hill Nature
Reserve. The tinkling song
was most likely that of a Willow Warbler.

Cowslips
on
the Downs Link, south of the Cement Works
My
first Bee-fly
of the year visited a clump of Cowslips
that were very common on the verges of the Downs
Link from Old Shoreham north to the Cement Works. The early Blackthorn
showed
off its spectacular blossom.

With
the wind veering to a prevailing south-westerly (Force

clouds.
Blackthorn
and
Alexanders
by
the River Adur at Old
Shoreham
In
addition to emerging Blackthorn
flowers, I was surprised to come across my first Hawthorn
flowers of the year on the airport side of the
Toll
Bridge. A young Rabbit
looked out of place amongst the flowering
Scentless Mayweed and ruderal ground vegetation
on the land disturbed for the construction of Waller's
Pumphouse and associated culverts and drainage.
My first Small White Butterfly
of 2022 settled
in the afternoon.

A
chill breeze (Force 6) from the north felt
below zero at midday.
I got caught out in a sleet flurry
in the afternoon. It was all over in three minutes.
