A
visit to Woods Mill marred by a
rain shower failed to be photogenic under the dark clouds.
A
Great
Spotted Woodpecker, visiting its noisy
young in the distant hole in a tree, was the highlight. One Mute
Swan had three cygnets
in tow. A Fox
visited a meadow with lots of flowering
Yellow Rattle.

In
the afternoon sunshine, the swathes of Horseshoe
Vetch,
Hippocrepis comosa,
on
the lower slopes of Mill Hill
were about their peak profusion. About fifty (partially counted)
male
Adonis
Blue Butterflies fluttered around restlessly,
with just the one possible female.
Alas my physical health was limiting on the steep slopes and I could
only add a few Brimstones,
a dozen male Common Blues,
a Small Heath,
a Large White,
one Dingy Skipper and
my first of the year Brown Argus to
my butterfly list.
Air
temperature 22°C at 7:00 pm.

A dozen
male Adonis Blue Butterflies visited
the abundant newly flowering Horseshoe
Vetch,
Hippocrepis comosa,
on
the lower slopes of Mill Hill in the early
afternoon.

Mill
Hill
My
first Wall Brown Butterfly
of the year fluttered around the long grass south of the Reservoir on the
top part of Mill Hill with occasional
Brimstone
Butterflies. On the middle slopes, I heard
plenty of varied bird song
emanating from inside the scrub.
Cowslips
were flowering but they were not
seen amongst the rabbit burrows where they were common in previous years.

There
have been numerous reports of up to three Whimbrels
on the River Adur
at low tide within the Shoreham boundaries.

A
White-tailed
Eagle passed very low over my garden in
north Shoreham at 2:40 pm.
It flew in from south-west trailing a large number of the local gull &
corvid population, and headed further north-east before circling up high,
roughly above Truleigh Hill where
it was joined by a second bird. They both circled for a while before separating
and going higher & further north into the clouds.

The
shoots of a dozen or so Green-winged Orchids
rose above the short turf of the conservation pastures at Anchor
Bottom.
