21 August 2023
A Buzzard quartered over the vineyard on the levels below and to the west of the steep lower slopes of Mill Hill on a warm cloudy afternoon. Within an hour, four Kestrels hovered over Erringham Hill to the north of Mill Hill Nature Reserve.

Butterflies were common on the lower slopes with frequent Common Blues, Adonis Blues, Chalkhill Blues, Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers, Small Heaths, Red Admirals, occasional Small Whites, Large Whites, a few  Speckled Woods and Wall Browns. Only a quarter of an acre transect was examined.

3 August 2023

Chalkhill Blue, Peacock
Brown Argus, Gatekeeper
Upper Mill Hill

On a cloudy middle of the day, I was no longer fit enough to scramble around the lower slopes of Mill Hill, when the butterflies should be at their peak. On the top meadows, Common Blues were frequent and probably common, with frequent Brown Argus, Meadow Browns, Peacocks, Red Admirals, occasional Brimstones, Gatekeepers, and at least one Chalkhill Blue in a curtailed brief visit. The 20+ Brown Argus were both prevalent and very noticeable.
Eight species was a low count. The first Blackberries were available.
