Shoreham
Christmas Extravaganza
The
Albion
were on the telly at midday (they defeated Rushden
& Diamonds 2-1 in FA Cup Round 2 in a scrappy
game) and the pubs with the large screens like the Waterside
(Lady Jane) were packed with football fans.
The
younger children (up to age 9) seemed to be enjoying themselves and there
was a biggish crowd, several thousand people, with hundreds viewing the
fireworks over the Adur at about 9:00 pm on Saturday
night 8 December 2001.

Wildlife
Notes
4 December
2001
Like
an arrow a Grey Heron
squawked continuously as it flew upriver over the footbridge crossing the
Adur between Coronation Green and Shoreham beach. The Heron's bulk was
smaller than the accompanying juvenile Herring
Gulls, but when approached the roosting
area for 40 Greater Black-backed Gulls,
hundreds of Black-headed Gulls,
and a small flock of 40 Lapwings plus
other estuarine birds, its
appearance caused hundreds of birds to take to the air. Rafts of Mallards
numbered over 45 in one group, a larger number than normally seen on the
River Adur estuary.

The
woodland floor of Lancing
Ring is carpeted with fallen leaves under the Beech trees in this area
giving a patchwork of autumnal colours from yellow to brown. Under the
Ash trees elsewhere the leaf litter is far less colourful. It has
become
quite muddy in places as walkers have trod the well used paths. The dewpond
looks calm, it's aquatic plants looking yellowed as winter approaches.

Grandma
Got Run Over By A Reindeer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(chorus)
Grandma
got run over by a reindeer
Walking
home from our house Christmas Eve
You
can say there's no such thing as Santa
But
as for me and Grandpa, we believe
She'd
been drinking too much eggnog
And
we begged her not to go
But
she forgot her medication
As
she staggered out the door into the snow
When
we found her Christmas morning
At
the scene of the attack
There
were hoof prints on her forehead
And
incriminating Claus-marks down her back
(chorus)
Now
the goose is on the table
And
the pudding made of fig (ah!)
And
the blue and silver candles
That
would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig
It's
not Christmas without Grandma
All
the family's dressed in black
And
we just can't help but wonder
Should
we open up her gifts or send them back
ALL:
Send them back!
(chorus)
Now
we're all so proud of Grandpa
He's
been taking it so well
See
him in there watching football
Drinking
beer and playing cards with cousin Mel
I've
warned all our friends and neighbours
Better
watch out for yourselves
They
should never give a licence
To
a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves
(chorus)
Sing
it, Grandpa!
(chorus)

Sunset over Buckingham
House, Shoreham
(Put the cursor on the top
window on the far left)
Thomas
de Bokyngham represented New Shoreham as MP in 1357-7 and 1362.
Thomas
de Bokyngham died in 1395, an outlaw, and his lands and tenements, " by
reason of his outlawry taken into the hands of the King." New Shoreham
was held by Lord de Poynings at that time.
This
extract from Cheal's "History of Shoreham" gives an unfair bias against
the Buckingham family who were Lords of the Manor at Shoreham for centuries.

The
first new worm-virus was received on 8 December 2001. It might be a good
idea to update your virus protection. Badtrans
II virus exceeded 90 last night and since 25 November 2001, I have received
over 100 (I stopped counting at 93) worm-like viruses and one Word Macro-virus.
